Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon

Sanaya Irani as Khushi Kumari Gupta and Barun Sobti as Arnav Singh Raizada in IPKKND

A huge sigh of relief was let out around the world at 8pm tonight as Arnav and Khushi finally tied the knot. It is a milestone for all the fans (such as I) who have been following the show from the very beginning. Not to mention the wedding promises an end to a convoluted storyline that has been going for over a year.

I’ve enjoyed the romance and the light-hearted comedy, the characters have driven the show forward each week. But the kidnapping of the male lead, the constant misunderstandings between the main characters, repeated wedding sequences and the will-they-won’t-they stretched for over 12 months; all have seemed like detours towards the main story.

Post the wedding, it will be interesting to see where the story goes. Initially, the promos of the show indicated a parting of the way for the two lovers when they discover a shocking connection in their past. This has now been revealed – Arnav’s mother committed suicide after daddy dear had an affair with an unknown female. The father, suffering from guilt followed suit, leaving Arnav and Anjali, his Di (sister), orphaned to be raised by their grandmothers’. The mystery woman has been revealed to be Khushi’s maternal aunt, Garima, who raised her after her parents died in an accident.

Arnav’s paternal grandmother, a grey character, chooses the wedding day to reveal this truth. Our hero is confused and angered at the revelation but in the end true love triumphs and he chooses to forgive and move on in life with his dear Khushi. His reasoning, which I think was well informed, is that his father was more at fault then either woman, he lied and cheated to both. Garima leaves him when it’s revealed that he is married. Arnav’s mother commits suicide at the betrayal she had received. Arnav recalls an incident where his mother had told him it is wrong to destroy roses simply because a thorn pricks your finger. Using this analogy, our hero returns to the heroine and the wedding takes places.

After all this drama, we still have Shaym (Sha-arm) Anjali’s husband who has his eye on Khushi ready to create trouble in the newly weds lives. You’d think I’d stop watching – but the characters have so many facets that I am going to keep watching. If only to see what dramas the newly weds must suffer through now.
